One of the most important challenges that young Christians face today is beginning, from an early age, to ask God for a faithful husband or wife. Although many young people invest time thinking about their studies, their professional careers, and their personal goals, they must also remember that one of the most important decisions of their lives will be choosing the person with whom they will spend the rest of their days.
Marriage is a divine institution established by God from the beginning of creation. Genesis 2:24 says, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” God designed marriage to be a permanent, holy, and blessed relationship.
For this reason, young people must prepare themselves spiritually for this important commitment.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR MARRIAGE
Preparation for marriage does not begin on the day of the engagement or on the wedding day. It begins during youth.
1. Develop a strong relationship with God
Before you can love another person, you must learn to love God above all things.
Jesus taught:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37).
A young person who loves God will be better prepared to love his or her future spouse.
2. Learn to pray continually
Young Christians must ask God for wisdom to make the right decisions.
James wrote:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God” (James 1:5).
Prayer should include requests such as:
- Lord, help me become a better person
- Give me wisdom to choose wisely
- Prepare my heart for marriage
- Help me find a faithful person
- Always guide me in the right path
3. Strengthen your Christian character
Paul exhorted Timothy:
“Be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12).
Marriage requires:
- Responsibility
- Patience
- Self-control
- Humility
- Love
- Commitment
- Sacrifice
4. Learn Biblical principles about marriage
Many marriages fail because people do not understand what God teaches about the home.
Young people should study passages such as:
- Genesis 2:24
- Proverbs 31
- Ephesians 5:22–33
- Colossians 3:18–19
- 1 Peter 3:1–7
HOW TO CHOOSE WISELY
Modern society teaches that physical appearance, money, and popularity are the most important qualities. The Bible teaches something completely different.
1. Look for someone who loves God
Your priority should be to find someone who puts God first.
Matthew 6:33 says:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.”
2. Look for a faithful and obedient person
Your future husband or wife should be someone who is:
- Faithful to God (Revelation 2:10)
- Obedient to His Word (John 14:15)
- Committed to the church (Hebrews 10:24–25)
- Humble (Philippians 2:3)
- Patient and kind (Colossians 3:12–14)
Proverbs 31:30 states:
“Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.”
3. Seek wise counsel
Proverbs 11:14 says:
“In the multitude of counselors there is safety.”
Parents, elders, and mature Christians can provide valuable guidance.
4. Learn from Biblical examples
Positive examples
Isaac and Rebekah (Genesis 24): a relationship founded on prayer and trust in God.
Aquila and Priscilla (Acts 18:1–3): a marriage devoted to serving the Lord.
Negative examples
Samson (Judges 14:1–3): he made impulsive decisions based on outward appearance.
Solomon (1 Kings 11:1–4): he allowed the wrong people to turn his heart away from God.
HOW TO MAINTAIN A HAPPY MARRIAGE ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE
Choosing wisely is important, but maintaining a strong marriage requires continual effort.
1. Put God at the center of your home
Ecclesiastes 4:12 declares:
“A threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
A strong marriage consists of the husband, the wife, and God.
2. Practice Biblical love
Paul wrote:
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church” (Ephesians 5:25).
Biblical love involves:
- Patience
- Sacrifice
- Forgiveness
- Respect
- Service
First Corinthians 13:4–8 describes true love.
3. Practice communication
Proverbs 15:1 says:
“A soft answer turns away wrath.”
Husbands and wives must learn to communicate with respect, honesty, and love.
4. Pray together
Prayer strengthens the marriage relationship.
Philippians 4:6 says:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.”
5. Be faithful to one another
Hebrews 13:4 teaches:
“Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled.”
Faithfulness is essential to marital happiness.
6. Practice forgiveness
Colossians 3:13 says:
“Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another.”
No marriage is perfect; therefore, forgiveness must be an essential part of the Christian home.
Young Christians must begin early in life to ask God for a faithful husband or wife. They must prepare spiritually, choose wisely, and strive to maintain a Christ-centered marriage.
May every young person remember the words of the psalmist:
“Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass” (Psalm 37:5).
If we put God first, we will be able to enjoy strong marriages, happy homes, and families that glorify His name.
